Over the course of the next few issues, I’ll be sharing the results of my students’ hard work in Siena. They dreamed up these beautiful images with the help of Italian photographer Christian Brogi, who has shot for Italian Vogue and National Geographic. The vintage fashion is courtesy of Siena boutique Aloe & Wolf.
This photograph was shot on location in Siena at Fontebranda, a thirteenth century fountain cited by Dante in his Inferno.

Tra le scelte infinite dello scatto fotografico, l’arte di Christian Brogi è una continua e spasmodica ricerca di scrittura con la luce, un miracolo dell’attimo che, come scriveva Boubat: “verrà a salvarci” … ritratti del pensiero in bianco e nero per catturare le anime!
His work is an exploration of time.Time is revealed as a moment of transition between actions. The characters/objects, often in unusual situations, are, in their immobility, able and eager to show us the flowing of timein one gesture. His works are often ambiguous, subjective, and endless, indicating the becoming, the mutability of existence, and give rise to multiple interpretations. They are always balanced between present and past. In his poetic universe, time is a relentless flowin which all things can be reinterpreted. Time carries its disorienting, bare urban landscapes, where the present moment reveals itself in all its crudeness .

aspect of reality. It is always interesting to see what the photographer
imagines when he or she decides to take a picture. Sometimes the
domination of only one color is the catalyst that helps to the creation
of a new reality.
This is what makes people so interested in monochrome photographs.
The new emerging from something familiar, which seems known,
but so different at the same time.

I love how the photographer is celebrating “relationship” in this image for the Strong Women assignment – and how the story of relationship here is more nuanced than a hug. These 3 women really know each other and in my experience, cultivating relationships is one of the strongest (and most beautiful) aspects of being a woman. Bravo.

scattata sulle Dolomiti,che ha ricevuto
cinque premi diversi in denaro e
materiali fotografici, ed è tra le più
viste sul portale Viewbug. Ma la lista
sarebbe molto lunga, dato che nel
suo portfolio vi sono foto ormai notissime
un po’ ovunque e premiate in
grandi concorsi mondiali. Uno stile
particolare e affascinante, quello di
Brogi, che riesce a catturare quello
che l’occhio non vede ma che non sa
sfuggire all’obbiettivo, ossia le emozioni
e i brividi che solo un grande

L’ opera racconta e riporta alla memoria dei visitatori Il gesto della raccolta del sale compiuto da Mahatma Gandhi come atto conclusivo della sua marcia avvenuta da Amedabad fino a Dandi, nel marzo 1930 in India, nell’ambito della Satyagraha (Lotta partecipata di un popolo senza ricorrere alla violenza), per manifestare contro la tassa sul sale, su cui vigeva un assoluto monopolio imperiale, imposta dal governo britannico a tutto il popolo indiano. La marcia durata 26 giorni coprì a piedi una distanza di circa 200 miglia e portò la protesta pacifica direttamente nelle saline, presidiate dalla polizia inglese. Partirono in 78 e arrivarono in diverse migliaia. La “marcia del sale” si concluse con l’arresto di più di 60.000 persone, tra cui Gandhi, condannato a 6 anni, e moltissimi membri del Congresso. Fu un gesto di grande importanza sociale, e come disse Gandhi: “With this, I am shaking the foundation of the British Empire”
L’atto partecipato che i tre artisti richiedono ai visitatori, è raccogliere un pugno di sale sottraendolo al “mandala” da loro composto e andarlo a riporre nel contenitore trasparente, man mano che i visitatori raccoglieranno il sale per conservarlo come bene prezioso (purifica, conserva, protegge), verrà svelato il disegno iniziale del mandala.
Un gesto che ci fa salire verticalmente dal basso verso l’alto, così come avviene durante la costruzione della nostra anima, tra ricordi, memorie e ambizione di sogni poetici, per far sì che si arrivi ad un Altrove dove le nostre esistenze diventano collettivo universale di rispetto per l’esistenza umana. Fare nostro un atto, istintivamente impossessarsi della sua vitalità e immedesimarsi alla scoperta finale di un bisogno di pace.

Christian Brogi was awarded in the International Photography Awards Competition. International Photography Awards (IPA) has announced the winners of Home’s competition.
Christian Brogi was Awarded: Honorable Mention in Home – Perception category for the winning entry “The Wait.”
The Home International Photography Awards received nearly 18,000 submissions from 104 countries across the globe. IPA is a sister-effort of the Lucie Foundation, where the top three winners are announced at the annual Lucie Awards gala ceremony. The Foundation’s mission is to honor master photographers, to discover new and emerging talent and to promote the appreciation of photography. Since 2003, IPA has had the privilege and opportunity to acknowledge and recognize contemporary photographer’s accomplishments in this specialized and highly visible competition. Title of the Contest: The Rebirth of Wonder
Giorgio Vasari, the founder of modern art history, devotes his “Lives of the Most Eminent Painters Sculptors and Architects” to an endeavor beyond mere historiography. Vasari analyses the nature of art itself by describing in language bellissimo the arts of the Renaissance. He comes once and again on his reasoning to the sense of wonder, of amazement, of awe. The arts are products of genius, wonders of the Nature that resembles itself. Marvels that are recognized by an unequivocal sense of wonder. One who stands in front of The School of Athens “has great reason to marvel, for it amazes all who behold it”, the eminent Raffaello da Urbino was “left marveling and amazed” in presence of Leonardo’s works. Even when he describes the contribution of the patrons of the arts such as Lorenzo de Medici, the Magnificent, Vasari says that he put the means “to amaze the world”.
What do we really know five hundred years after Vasari’s book of wonder and awe? Although several theorists have attempted to define awe and related states, empirical studies of awe are almost non-existent. The scientific community has been taking the “sense of wonder”, more and more in consideration. In 1992 Paul Ekman posited that awe may be a distinct emotion. Recent work has documented a distinct facial expression for awe (Shiota, Campos, & Keltner, 2003), and has provided preliminary data on the personality variables associated with dispositional awe-proneness (Shiota, Keltner, & John, 2006). But it is still very difficult to find agreement on a description of this emotion, in part because the elicitors are so diverse, and the emotion’s function is unclear (Lazarus, 1991).
The most important study about this sense of wonder is “Approaching awe, a moral, spiritual, and aesthetic emotion.” By Keltner and Haidt in 2003. They support a vision of “awe” characterized by two features: perceptual vastness and need for accommodation. They understand vastness, of course, in a wide sense. A stimulus may convey vastness in physical space, in time, in number, in complexity of detail, in ability, even in volume of human experience. What is critical is that the stimulus dramatically expands the observer’s usual frame of reference in some dimension or domain, and that expansion of the frame of reference makes cognitive accommodation necessary.
From this point of view, the one of a contemporary Vasari, Art is what shakes you out of the frame you see the world through, and demands you to change, rethink, relocate, and awe in reverence at the vastness of this world.
